Summer Holiday Activities for Kids
Summer holidays have come round again (if you can believe it!) and I bet you’re wondering what on earth you can do to fill the time, we know we are! So, we’ve come up with some ideas for a fun summer holiday break, so that you don’t have to…
First up, it’s all things educational (you know we love learning!). There are so many wonderful places all around the UK that are perfect for new discoveries. Museums, science centres, nature reserves and so much more – we are spoilt for choice! Some of the eatsleepdoodle team’s favourites include, of course, the brilliant Natural History Museum, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow and the Victoria & Albert Museum. With lots to take in (including the beautiful buildings themselves) and fun activities for the kids, you won’t regret visiting one of these amazing museums.
Mini-scientists can explore the superb science centres up and down the country. There’s the exciting National Space Centre in Leicester, Techniquest in Cardiff – which is an interactive heaven for kids and We The Curious in Bristol is also great for a fascinating interactive day out.
If your little one loves the outdoors, wildlife and exploring new lands we think a nature reserve is the place to be. Rainham Marshes is a stone’s throw from central London and boasts wonderful wildlife, guided walks, bike rides and family activities and events! The RSPB website also gives helpful information so you’ll know what flora and fauna to look out for on your visit. If you find yourself in Scotland this summer, Loch Leven & the Nature Reserve are a must-visit! Kids can get involved with seasonal nature bingo, go pond dipping and explore the natural play area. Fun fact - Loch Leven is home to more breeding ducks than anywhere else in inland Europe!
For magical-minded explorers, Tintagel Castle is a great idea for immersing yourself in history, myths and dramatic coastal views! Explore the castle and beach, taking in the scenery and learning about the fascinating history – linked to King Arthur. For an enchanting adventure, try Groombridge Place’s Enchanted Forest – where you can get up close with your fairytale favourites! If history is your thing, then why not visit the Mary Rose in Portsmouth, Bodiam Castle, Blickling Hall or Stonehenge – there are so many historical places to explore.
For day trips and local adventures, little ones can carry their snacks, findings, pocket money and more in our butterfly crossbody bag or one of our tote bags. Perfect and easy for on-the-go use!
We’re always in the mood for crafting – it’s a fabulous way to spend a day or two in the summer! The Den Kit Company have got some great nature-based ideas to get you feeling crafty, we love these edible flower lollipops! Louise from Messy Little Monsters has a great list of fun, summery crafts that you and your kids will love doing. Have a look through the extensive list and enjoy crafting the day away. And don’t forget colouring! All our eatsleepdoodle tablecloths and placemats are great activities for kids to do as they come-and-go through the house in the holidays. Simply leave one of our cotton tablecloths on the table, with some washable fabric markers nearby and kids can pick up a pen and start colouring whenever they feel like it. If they fancy a change after a few days, pop it on a warm wash and start again!
Avoiding airport queues and delays is probably high on the list of priorities this year, so why not try a staycation? Grab the kids, pack the car and head off to one of the UK’s many beautiful spots. From beaches to woodland, resorts to city breaks – we’ve got your little ones’ packing sorted. Our world map backpack and colour & carry totes (in butterfly, pond life and world map designs) are perfect for any adventure! Kids will enjoy having their own bag to look after and it doubles as a fun colouring activity for any car, train (or plane!) journey - complete with a set of 10 washable fabric pens, you’ve got the entertainment sorted - again and again!
We hope we’ve given you some summer-holiday-inspiration. Wherever you’re going to this summer, at home or away, there is so much to explore. We hope you enjoy a sun and fun-filled summer!
