Let's work from North to South...

This is just the COOLEST day out for the kids! Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 6-hour round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes - the highest mountain, most western rail station, deepest loch and shortest river. Great for a rainy day, this has over 100 exhibits to trick the minds of the little ones, and will have them whooping with delight! This place is really quite special. Nothing really compares to it... Endless (40,000 in fact!) hexagonal stones, all fitting together like the perfect jigsaw. It's the product of a volcanic eruption and the kids can spend forever chasing each other across them, like stepping stones! Buy your tickets on site, and all the information you need is here.

For some reason, kids just LOVE dungeons. And York's is wonderful - with over 10 live shows for kids to participate in, they can whoop and shriek their way through the visit! It involves 75 minutes of sheer madness as you walk through their theatrical delights. Book a spot here.  

This is an absolute winner for any children that spend hours bouncing in the garden, whenever there is a spare moment. Bounce Below takes this to the extreme, with fantastic trampolines spanning a disused underground mine. Perhaps not a parent's cup of tea, but certainly would have been mine! There's many a castle to visit in the UK, but Warwick has really got it sorted for the children (and adults, too!). With manic mazes, princess parties and turret tours there really is something for everyone! It is set within stunning gardens so leave the kids in the dress up area and go for a sunny wander (if you're lucky with the weather...). There are some great special ticket offers at the moment. 

This barely needs explaining. London's leading animal museum, it's completely free and will wow anyone who enters its four walls. There are some totally spectacular exhibits (dinosaurs are a MUST) and it's hugely educational, too. Most excitingly, the ice rink opens on 25th October! 

Bristol Zoo is the world's oldest provincial zoo, opened in 1836. It's a really amazing day out for the whole family, with some rare and unusual animals on display and works hard on conservation and breeding endangered species. The seals and penguins are particularly popular (can be watched both above and below the water!) If you book online now, a child can go free with a full paying adult. Bargain! 

Last but not least, the Eden project is such a cool day out. There is so much to see and learn about, you won't know where to start! From bees to rainforests, and England's longest zipwire, everyone will be happy. It's a nature lover's paradise, and also a great way to inspire the kids. Ticket link here.
